It may well be a rather conventional though lengthy biopic but it does a great job in celebrating a remarkable man. Coming so soon after Mandelas death it has even more resonance, and there is much to appreciate in its determination to compress his autobiography. And the movie-makers dont shy away from more uncomfortable aspects of his life, such as his womanising and failed first marriage. Director Justin Chadwick never tries to overcomplicate the story, instead presenting his life in a straightforward manner.

Taking on an iconic role such as Mandela lifts him into the superstar league but he admits he didnt really want to do it. I just felt like I wasnt up for it, he says. I didnt have the attributes. Having overcome his fears thanks to persuasion from director Justin Chadwick, Elbas enthusiasticresearch he never met the man himself uncovered surprises about Mandela.
